Luke Shaw had one of his best games in memories of him in a Manchester United shirt. The left-back put in a commanding display in his side’s 2-1 win against Leicester City in their opening game of the 2018-19 Premier League season.

The youngster scored his first ever goal for the club with a brilliant left-footed shot that went past Leicester keeper Kasper Schmeichel.

It helped United go 2-0 up with six minutes left for regulation time. Jamie Vardy got a goal back in injury time for the Foxes, but it was for naught, as Paul Pogba had earlier opened the scoring inside two minutes.

If Shaw was brilliant on the night, so was Kasper Schmeichel. The Denmark international made a brilliant save to deny Romelu Lukaku, who sprawled an open chance after being fed by Alexis Sanchez.

Shaw, who was praised by manager Jose Mourinho post United’s victory, made a revelation about his encounter with Schmeichel after the full-time whistle.

Speaking to Sky Sports, the former Southampton man said that the shot-stopper believed that his first touch was down to luck. Shaw then replied cheekily in a light-hearted manner.

The Englishman revealed: “First touch? Deliberate! – Schmeichel came up to me afterwards and said ‘you spawny man’! I said ‘I don’t care it went in!'”

After his encouraging performance that drew a lot of attention amongst everyone, Shaw will be hoping to build on from this show.

Manchester United face Brighton next weekend, and Shaw has rightfully earned his place in the starting line-up. Can he live up to the billing once again?
