Swansea break club transfer record to re-sign player they once bought for free

    The game’s gone, hasn’t it?

Many fans claim they’re growing disillusioned by the mammoth transfer fees being thrown around in modern football.

And after Swansea’s Deadline Day business they might have a point.

Twitter Ayew signing on the dotted line[/caption]

That’s because the Swans have broken their club transfer record to re-sign Andre Ayew from West Ham… a player they signed for FREE just two-and-a-half-years ago.

Ayew first moved to south Wales in 2015 for absolutely nothing after his contract expired at Marseille.

And he was a real hit, scoring 12 times in one season and proving to be one of the signings of the season.

Bradley Ormesher - The Times Ayew was a hit in Wales[/caption]

That convinced West Ham, who were looking to flex their financial muscle after moving to the London Stadium, to fork out a club record £20m fee of their own to bring Ayew to east London.

It’s fair to say his Hammers career never reached those dizzy heights, scoring just nine goals in 18 months.

Andre Ayew had earlier fired in a double to level the scoresBut this didn’t happen a lot at West HamReuters

And now Ayew is going back the way he came for £18m; also the most the Swans have ever forked out for a player.

Ironically, he even initially turned his nose up at the idea because he felt he could engineer a move to a ‘bigger club’.

West Ham striker Andre Ayew doesn’t want to go back to Swansea. They had £14m bid rejected on Sunday. Thinks he can get a move to "bigger club" but time running out

Vowing commitment to the Mancunian club until the summer of 2019, Juan Mata has signed a one-year contract extension at Old Trafford.

With just six months left in the remainder of his previous contract, Manchester United triggered the contract extension to prolong his stay with the Red Devils.

Although the talks were maintained even from the start of the season, the deal has finally actualized now.

Jose Mourinho, being an admirer of the talented midfielder, spoke about his valuable asset on multiple occasions. Likewise, the gaffer did so yet again in a press conference ahead of the match against Tottenham Hotspur.

Confirming the 29-year-old’s contract extension, the prestigious tactician proclaimed: “Mata is very important. When I arrived one-and-a-half years ago, [they said], ‘Mata is in trouble, in trouble, in trouble’, and now he’s getting an extension of one more year. An important player for me; important player for the club; important player for the other players.”

Subsequently, the former Chelsea playmaker expressed his pleasure in staying at the Manchester club for a year more and conceded he hopes for many likely years to come in an exclusive interview with MUTV on Tuesday afternoon.

“I still feel very happy and very proud to be part of this club,” Mata stressed. “I think everyone that belongs to Manchester United should feel privileged, and that’s how I feel.

“I’m happy with everyone at the club and, obviously, with the manager and my team-mates. Once you are part of this club, your football career is not the same; it changes because this is one of the biggest clubs in football history. Every day I try to tell myself how lucky and how privileged I am, try to take advantage of every single training session, and try to see how important it is to be a Manchester United player.”

“At eight, ten, twelve years old, I never imagined that I would play for such a club,”, he further added, “I remember the big players – Scholes, Giggs, Beckham, Van Nistelrooy, Ferdinand, Vidic – and it felt so far from where I was playing, but now I’m here it’s a special feeling.

“We have had so many new players during my four years, but now we know each other and understand each other better. We are creating a kind of stability that I believe is needed to build and to create a positive consistency in terms of getting results and getting trophies.”

Joining the Red Giants in 2014, the talented figure has enjoyed a meteoric rise at the club, gradually transitioning to a solid fan-favourite. The supporters would undoubtedly be delighted to apprehend the announcement of the talisman’s extended stay.

Michael Carrick was seen cheering for his side during the Premier League encounter against Burnley at Turf Moor.

The club legend was surprisingly amongst the United fans in the away section of the stadium, as he saw his side winning the tie 1-0 to maintain their second position in the Premier League table.

Carrick was accompanied by his son, as he cheered for the team along with the away fans, which was indeed a special moment. He thoroughly enjoyed every bit of the experience, as he was seen chanting along with the supporters and celebrating United’s goal.

Carrick has missed almost the entire season with an irregular heart rhythm, and has featured in just one game so far. He is on his way to full fitness, though, and has been training with the squad off late.

The former England international will be hoping to play some games in his final season at the club, before he continues on at Old Trafford by joining the coaching staff after his contract expires at the end of the season.

United managed another clean sheet, as they hung on to earn a gritty hard-fought victory against Burnley. Anthony Martial scored the side’s lone goal via a brilliant Romelu Lukaku assist. The Mancunian club next faces a trip to Yeovil Town in the fourth round of the FA Cup.

Toronto FC signs homegrown midfielder Liam Fraser

Toronto FC announced Friday that it has signed midfielder Liam Fraser to a homegrown player contract.

Fraser, a 19-year-old native of Toronto, is a former TFC youth academy product, who has spent the better part of the last two years playing for the team’s TFC 2 farm club in the second-tier United Soccer League.

“Over that past two seasons with TFC II and during his time with our academy, Liam has shown a tremendous amount of hard work and dedication, especially in his desire to learn the defensive midfield role at the next level,” TFC GM Tim Bezbatchenko said in a news release.

In total, Fraser made 52 appearances in three seasons for TFC II in the USL, scoring two goals. He originally signed with TFC II in February 2016.

    https://twitter.com/Liam_Fraser7/status/954451083023167488

As a homegrown player signed from the team’s youth academy, Fraser will not count against the TFC’s salary budget. Fraser is the 16th player in club history to sign for the first team from its youth academy.

Internationally, Fraser has represented Canada at the CONCACAF Men’s U-20 Championship.

Earlier on Friday, Toronto FC selected defender-midfielder Tim Kubel from the University of Louisville and goalkeeper Drew Shepherd from Western Michigan University at the MLS college draft in Philadelphia.

The signing of Fraser comes on the heels on a few off-season losses for Toronto, including midfielder Benoit Cheyrou (retired), winger Raheem Edwards (now with the Montreal Impact) and fullback Steven Beitashour (free agent, signed with LAFC).

The Reds signed forward Ayo Akinola to a homegrown player deal last month. Armando Cooper, Tsubasa Endoh and Oyvind Alseth all had their contract options declined by TFC after last season. TFC could potentially re-sign them to new deals, or they could sign elsewhere.

Reason Why Neymar Got Booed By PSG Fans Despite Scoring Four Goals
    Paris Saint-Germain’s Neymar looks dejected.

    REUTERS/Russell Cheyne

Disregarding the baffling performance Neymar put up for his side, the celebrated forward endured boos from the home support as Paris Saint-Germain established an indisputable 8-0 victory against Dijon at home last night.

The Parc des Princes crowd feasted their eyes with majestic football plays, as the Brazilian ravished the opposition’s defence, scoring four goals and setting up two others for the Parisians.

The overwhelming victory was enjoyed by the fans, conspicuous by the intensity they exhibited throughout till PSG got awarded a penalty as the game neared its late moments.

The former Barca attacker instigated an act of displeasure amongst fans with one of his self-indulgent acts. He refused to hand over the penalty to Edinson Cavani, who’s earlier goal had rendered him level with PSG’s all-time top goalscorer Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

A second strike would’ve seen the Uruguayan getting crowned as the goal king of Les Parisiens, yet the big-budget 25-year-old chose to steal the spotlight, converting the chance and marking up his fourth goal of the day.

Naturally, the supporters took their stand against it, yelling for Cavani to have his moment at the top of their lungs, only to behold the selfish judgment of the instrumental figure. Despite being the man to win the penalty, the experienced figure’s opportunity was snatched away.

    Watch Reactions:

However, although it frustrated him a bit, Cavani didn’t refrain himself from high-fiving his compatriot after Neymar marked the fourth to his tally.

The 83rd minute had the voice of displeasure from the crowd in the framework, as the team members enjoyed their 8th goal of the day.

With the scenario expected to continue in the future, it is not the first time the attacking duo has caused controversies with reports this season, falling out whenever a penalty or free-kick is up for the grabs.

Arsenal, Chelsea in sterile stalemate in League Cup semis
Arsenal, Chelsea in sterile stalemate in League Cup semis

LONDON — Cramped into Stamford Bridge media tribune was an unfamiliar occupant leaping to his feet, bellowing disapproval and kicking seats in frustration.

It’s not surprising Arsene Wenger was so exacerbated. After all, he was managing Arsenal in a League Cup semifinal.

Wenger was forced a dozen rows back from the Arsenal bench at Chelsea on Wednesday while serving the second game of a three-match touchline ban for misconduct toward a referee.

Wenger was more animated at times than his team on the pitch as the fatigue of strain of playing five games in around two weeks caught up on both teams as they laboured to a 0-0 draw in the first leg.

The London rivals only met a week ago, although that draw was a 2-2 Premier League thriller. And they will face off again in two weeks to complete the League Cup semifinal at the Emirates Stadium when Wenger is due to be back in the dugout.

While Chelsea’s Antonio Conte was in the customary managerial position patrolling the touchline on Wednesday, with his players close by to receive direct instructions, Wenger was reduced to occasional exacerbated shouts.

For once the media didn’t have to strain their ears to listen to Wenger’s howls. Every groan and muttered remark was in full earshot, every shake of the head clear to see and the benches reverberated from his kicks.

"What?!" Wenger shouted after Chelsea was awarded a free kick in the first half when Eden Hazard went down under Hector Bellerin’s challenge. The French manager sprung out of his seat at the start of the second half when Danny Welbeck was penalized for fouling Moses.

And for the manager who bemoaned last week that "referees get away" without facing English press criticism, his targets were at close quarters. Not that Wenger interacted with the media during the game, while flanked by a security guard and coach Jens Lehmann at the end of a long row of seats.

"It was frustrating," Wenger said later in the media room. "But the position was quite interesting because I was close to the bench and not too high up."

If the sight of Wenger watching his own team play from the press box was unusual, so too was Alexis Sanchez being on the bench.

Wenger’s biggest call came before the match — dropping his star forward and only sending down instructions in the second half for the Chilean to be brought on.

It was a decision, Wenger insisted, that had nothing to do with Sanchez being targeted by Manchester City in the January transfer window.

"The team selection had nothing to do with the transfer market," said Wenger, who has been willing to sell defensive midfielder Francis Coquelin to Valencia this week.

Sanchez can leave for free when his contract expires in June.

"I want him to stay for longer," Wenger said, optimistically trying to avoid being drawn into a discussion over a potential sale.

Would Sanchez have made the difference on the pitch from the start? Both teams were lacking the attacking sting to find a breakthrough in this stalemate.

Chelsea did look more likely to take the lead but was wasteful twice with headers. At the end of the first half, Fabregas nodded tamely straight at Arsenal goalkeeper David Ospina. Midway through the second half, Andreas Christiansen headed off target.

"We must be more clinical," said Conte, whose side also drew 0-0 at second-tier Norwich in the FA Cup on Saturday. "We have to improve with all the players, not only the strikers.

"When you have the chance, you have to score."

There was a blow for Arsenal when Jack Wilshere, who was handed the captain’s armband to cap a recent resurgence in an injury-blighted career, limped off after spraining his left ankle.

"It’s a shame to lose him when he’s in such good form," Wenger said. "It was by blocking a shot that turned his ankle. It was his good ankle."

Wenger said Wilshere will miss Sunday’s Premier League game against Bournemouth. The midfielder could be back for the final part of January’s Arsenal-Chelsea trilogy on Jan. 24.

"To play three times in three weeks (against Arsenal) is very strange," Conte said. "But it’s simpler to prepare the game because you know the team."

The League Cup is the only domestic competition Wenger hasn’t won in more than 21 years at Arsenal. It also offers his only prospect of domestic silverware this season, since Arsenal’s FA Cup defence ended at the first hurdle at Nottingham Forest on Sunday and the team is sixth in the Premier League.
