NEW YORK – Sebastian Giovinco, Justin Morrow and Victor Vazquez of Toronto FC, along with Kendall Waston of the Vancouver Whitecaps were named to Major League Soccer’s Best XI on Thursday.

The Best XI recognizes the league’s top players at each position as determined by media, players and MLS staff.

Giovinco earned the honour for the third time in as many seasons after scoring 16 goals and six assists. The Italian striker had six free kick goals during the regular season which set a new MLS single-season record.

Morrow and Vasquez earned their first Best XI selections as they helped Toronto reach the MLS Cup for a second-straight year.

Morrow scored a career-high eight goals, which led all MLS defenders. He earned player of the week honours twice and became the second player in club history to score a hat trick during league play.

Vasquez finished second in the league in assists with 16 during his first year in the MLS while adding eight goals.

  • Toronto FC striker Jozy Altidore doesn’t want your pity

Toronto FC striker Jozy Altidore doesn’t want your pity

TORONTO – Do not feel sorry for Jozy Altidore.

Altidore doesn’t want your pity. You needn’t bother coming to his defence. He is not a helpless victim. He is a grown man. He can take care of himself.

Sports writers are paid to spin narratives. Reporting the facts is the main part of the job, but putting individual performances and team results into a greater context runs a close second. We strive to be storytellers, to hook the reader with a compelling tale.

Sometimes we are guilty of shaping or distorting the facts to suit our narratives. But sometimes things perfectly line up for us, the elements naturally lending themselves to our stories. That certainly seemed to be the case with Altidore on Wednesday night after he scored the lone goal in Toronto FC‘s 1-0 win over the Columbus Crew, a result that booked the Reds’ spot in the MLS Cup for a second consecutive year.

Altidore has not had an easy time of it over the last few months. As one of the most-high profile American players, he and TFC captain Michael Bradley have suffered the brunt of fans’ displeasure over the U.S. failing to qualify for next summer’s World Cup.

In the Reds’ regular season finale, a sold-out crowd in Atlanta mercilessly booed Altidore and Bradley every time they touched the ball. New York fans followed suit in the first round of the playoffs, adding in a few “F–k you, Jozy” and “F–k you, Bradley” chants for good measure. After Altidore was subbed out, one Red Bulls fan behind Toronto’s bench chirped him by questioning his patriotism and religion – Altidore is a Jehovah’s Witness, and doesn’t sing The Star-Spangled Banner or put his hand over his heart when the anthem plays on religious grounds.

Finally, it all came together for Altidore on Wednesday night at BMO Field, the TFC forward having his “Bobby Baun moment” when he scored the winner while playing on an injured ankle.

It all fit into a wonderful story about redemption and overcoming adversity. Player suffers World Cup humiliation, player suffers abuse from fans, player scores winning goal in playoffs. Instant narrative! Or, so it seemed.

Helping to send his team through to the MLS Cup final wouldn’t make up for the World Cup disappointment, but surely, one reporter asked Altidore after the game, scoring that goal helped to alleviate some of the personal hurt.

Altidore, though, was having none of it.

“People keep thinking that I’m some wounded animal. [The World Cup failure] didn’t only happen to me – it happened to a group of guys, and a lot of fans. It is what it is. It’s disappointing, but we have to move on from it, and learn from it and become stronger for it … What happens in Toronto has nothing to do with what happened to the national team,” Altidore replied.

Maybe not qualifying for the World Cup is eating up Altidore in private moments. If it did, you could hardly blame him. Publically, however, he’s moved on from that disappointment by carrying himself with class and dignity, downplaying the “boo birds” and the profanity-laced chants directed at him. He’s simply got on with his life.

It’s this simple resolve, this strength of character, that also saw Altidore overcome a great deal of physical pain to produce one of the biggest moments in MLS history.

Accidently clattered into from behind by Crew defender Harrison Afful early in the second half, Altidore crumpled to the ground in a heap. He was in dire pain, twice limping off the field to receive treatment, which included getting his injured ankle taped up. But he blocked out the pain and latched onto a perfect pass from teammate Victor Vazquez before scoring at the far post to send BMO Field into a state of bedlam.

In the post-match press conference, Altidore admitted that he couldn’t really move and was just hobbling around the pitch after getting his ankle taped up on the sidelines. When he came back in, he knew he couldn’t last long, so he was simply trying to stay on the field long enough to give his potential replacement enough time to warm up. He ended up scoring the winner.

“I knew if there was a play, if I can get a chance to make a play, then I wanted to be on the field for it. It all worked out in the end,” Altidore said.

Altidore downplayed the heroic nature of his goal-scoring exploits on the night, but Bradley didn’t shy away from tooting his teammate’s horn.

“When you’re standing in the tunnel on nights likes this, and you look behind you, when you see Jozy, it’s a damn good feeling because you know what he’s going to be about,” Bradley offered.

“You know that he’s going to give you everything he has, and on a night when it didn’t necessarily come easily or simply, and in a moment when nobody would have thought twice if he had gone off, he found a way to keep going and make a big play for us.”

That’s what Jozy Altidore does. He makes things happen without drawing attention to himself or looking for approval. He just plays, quietly going about his business. Hardship happens, but that’s part of the game. He deals with it.

Don’t you dare feel sorry for him.

Salah was at it again on Wednesday night, coming off the bench to score twice as Liverpool comfortably saw off Stoke 3-0.

Sadio Mane opened the scoring in the first half before Salah scored a quick fire brace to make sure of all three points for the Reds.

But Liverpool supporters held special praise for a man who didn’t find the net.

Roberto Firmino’s unselfishness is one of his main and most endearing attributes, and the Brazilian displayed that quality again for Mane’s goal.

With Mane’s delicate chip only tricking over the line, Firmino had the opportunity to steal the goal himself – but instead stopped to allow his team-mate to score instead.

Sums up Firmino that he just stood and watched Mané's shot bounce over the line, even though he was in position to score it. Most strikers would probably tap that in and claim the goal.

Ridiculous Reason Why One Chelsea Player Is Banned From Pogba’s Home

    REUTERS/Benoit Tessier

Football is a very competitive sport; not just on the pitch among the players but also among passionate fans. This shared mentality of wanting to win at all costs is appreciable for sure, but certain players just take it to another level.

That’s probably how Kurt Zouma would describe Paul Pogba, who apparently banned the Stoke City man from his house.

Whilst Zouma has joined the Potters to developed his career that got stagnant for a while, Pogba has been on a path to prove his critics from last season dead wrong.

The midfielder has been one of the standout performers for the Red Devils and has already secured 3 goals and as many assists in the league despite suffering two months worth of injury recovery.

On the other hand, the pair are great friends and often come together to relieve eachother of their boredom. And from one of these instances, the talented defender has revealed something he did that got him banned from the Red Devil’s home.

“Pogba is one of the best players – he’s got everything,” the Chelsea loanee told Goal.

“That’s why people talk about him because he’s so so good.

“He doesn’t like to lose when we play card games, like Uno.

“The other day I went to his house and I beat him. He was so, so, so angry. He didn’t want me to come anymore.

“He told me ‘don’t come anymore to my house’. I said ‘my friend, please. It’s only Uno we’re talking about'”.

The French midfielder certainly has what is usually called an ‘elite mentality’, but clearly on a different and obsessive level.

Potential Lineups: Watford vs Manchester United

    Reuters / Eddie Keogh

Disregarding the fact that the victory was facilitated by their opponent’s mistake, Manchester United celebrated the triumph against Brighton & Hove Albion.

The 1-0 victory had a positive impact on the players, and it would indubitably influence their performances on their next fixture, as they are now ready to take on Watford on a Tuesday night away-fixture.

With eight points separating them from the team on top, the Old Trafford outfit will not be rooting for a victory but indeed a triumph with a great margin to separate them from the opposition, in the hopes of bettering the gap between them and Manchester City.

    Manchester United:

Jose Mourinho has reportedly reassembled Matteo Darmian, Daley Blind and Jesse Lingard to the squad for the Premier League fixture. However, Luke Shaw, Marouane Fellaini and Henrikh Mkhitaryan were not among the travelling squad, according to MEN. Club captain Michael Carrick is still building his fitness after having a cardiac ablation to deal with an irregular heart rhythm.

Dropping Darmian, Blind and Lingard for the Brighton fixture, the Portuguese tactician has them well rested and available for the important fixture. Zlatan Ibrahimovic, who returned from a long-term injury a week ago, is pushing to start, but the availability of Lukaku could rule out any possibility of that occurring. The Swede marked his appearance in three previous games of the Red Devils, albeit as a substitute.

Mourinho recently spoke of Watford: “They have an unusual squad for a mid-table team. They have a squad full of very good players who are not normal to be in these mid-table teams. They have a good coach. They have improved a lot from last season too.”

    Potential lineup:

    Goalkeeper: David De Gea

Defenders: Antonio Valencia, Chris Smalling, Marcos Rojo, Ashley Young

Midfielders: Nemanja Matic, Paul Pogba, Anthony Martial, Juan Mata, Rashford

    Striker: Romelu Lukaku

    Reuters / Eddie Keogh

    Watford:

Having won the last two games, the Vicarage Road outfit will be possessing a positive outlook on the match and would be ridden with confidence as they go up against the Red Giants. Nonetheless, a victory could hardly be easy, even though they could offer much resistance, making it hard for the opposition to snatch away three significant points.

Defender Miguel Britos’s presence is sceptical as he suffered a knock in the 3-0 victory over Newcastle and will be given a late fitness test, according to SkySports. Craig Cathcart (knee) and Younes Kaboul (hamstring), midfielder Nathaniel Chalobah (knee) and forward Isaac Success (knee) are reportedly likely to miss out once more.

Watford have lost 12 of their last 13 games against Manchester United in all competitions, winning the other in the Premier League in this exact fixture last season (3-1).

    Potential lineup:

    Goalkeeper: Heurelho Gomes

Defenders: Sebastian Prodl, C. Kabasele, Adrian Mariappa

Midfielders: Femenia, Marvin Zeegelaar, A. Doucoure, Tom Cleverley, Will Hughes

    Forwards: Richarlison, Andre Gray

MADRID — Gareth Bale is expected to make his return to Real Madrid’s lineup in a Copa del Rey match this week after being sidelined for more than two months because of injuries.

Barcelona have stepped up their efforts to lure Arsenal superstar Mesut Özil to the Nou Camp with a new bumper deal.

The German’s contract negotiations with the Gunners have prolonged beyond normal circumstances, and him staying seems like an unlikely possibility now. Özil is reportedly demanding a £300,000-a-week deal to extend his stay at the Emirates, which the club is reluctant to offer.

However, the London-based giants may have to brace themselves for an incoming bid from Barca, who, according to Mirror, have a £350,000-a-week deal waiting for the midfield maestro at Catalonia, should he decide to make the switch.

This development seems to be the result of interest from Manchester United, who are one of the clubs the German is interested to sign for in the event of a departure from North London.

Further, Inter Milan are also one of the interested parties in the 2014 World Cup champion’s services, and are open to table a bid around the region of £45 million.

The former Real Madrid man received a lot of harsh criticism, and even abuse from the Arsenal faithful following some of his questionable performances last season, making a switch of clubs understandable.

However, with the 29-year-old making a stunning comeback this season, Arséne Wenger might want to consider keeping arguably his best player.

Özil is heading into the last months of his current contract with the Londoners, and will be open to sign pre-contracts in January.

Man Utd was lucky to escape with a 1-0 at home against Brighton and Hove Albion on Saturday to retain the second spot in the league table behind leaders Man City.

Although Premier League is famous for its unpredictability, manager Jose Mourinho would have never expected such a tough fight from the Seagulls who simply refused to give up on the afternoon.

They were terrific in the first half largely.

The introduction of Zlatan Ibrahimovic in place of Juan Mata, when the scorecard was goalless, certainly helped to lit up the crowd. Zlatan’s entry meant Romelu Lukaku had a move to the wing.

The new combination didn’t seem to work as planned and Lukaku was even seen fighting to track back, winning duels on the field to get the ball.

However, the Red Devils were less concerned about his actions as they eventually took the lead courtesy of an Ashley Young shot that took a heavy deflection off defender Lewis Dunk.

Will Lukaku get a ban for that kick out @FA ?

Romelu Lukaku was seen not be happy with the way he was manhandled after the ball was cleared from a corner. Nevertheless, the camera captured a rather cheeky double kick attempted by the forward.

He was lucky that none of the referees took notice of the incident and he went unbooked.

Mourinho would, however, have warned him of such actions from the next as it can turn out to dearly affect the team.

Explained: Italy Could Still Make A Shock World Cup 2018 Appearance

Football giants Italy were left a sorry figure after their defeat over two legs in the 2018 FIFA World Cup play-offs against Sweden to mark a big shock especially after failing to qualify for the coveted tournament after 57 long years.

The 2006 winners weren’t the only big side though. The Netherlands, Chile and USA too misses out from the tourney to be held in Russia next year.

But now suddenly there is a glimmer of hope for Italy to make a shocking appearance in place of Peru. The South American nation, who qualified for football’s biggest carnival after overcoming New Zealand in the qualifier play-offs, run a risk of missing out.

According to a report in Libero, Peru’s national team has seen state interference in the country’s FA. Congresswoman Paloma Noceda is in the favour of the Institute of Sport to control the football association.

And the report claims that due to FIFA’s stance on governments meddling in football, officials could exclude Peru from the 2018 FIFA World Cup.

With the football’s governing body having the rights to replace Peru with a team of its choice, a report in Tuttosport claims that Italy could now be considered if a ruling of such instance is passed. This also depends on whether Peru’s Institute of Sports gets a nod to control the FA.

Although the chances are minimal of this happening, Italy’s little hope still lingers on if the reports end up gaining substance.

Italy are currently ranked 14th amongst the world’s best teams in the official FIFA rankings. The Azzurri had finished 2nd in Group G of the qualifiers behind Spain and eventually succumbed against Sweden in the play-offs earlier this month.

Barcelona, Chelsea advance to Champions League last 16

Chelsea advanced to the knockout stage of the Champions League with a game to spare after beating 10-man Qarabag 4-0 on Wednesday, securing manager Antonio Conte’s 50th victory in all competitions with the Blues.

Barcelona needed only a point to reach the Round of 16 and the Spanish superpower got exactly that against Juventus. A 0-0 draw at last year’s runner-up was enough to ensure top spot in Group D.

Already through, Paris Saint-Germain conceded the first goal of its European campaign in the first minute – before then unleashing its unstoppable firepower to thrash Celtic 7-1 in Paris.

A goalless draw at Basel would have been enough for Manchester United to top Group A, but the Premier League club slipped to its first group stage loss, going down 1-0 to a goal conceded just a minute from time.

Here is a look at what happened in Wednesday’s games.

    ——

    GROUP A

Manchester United was deservedly beaten 1-0 by a spirited Basel, leaving all the qualification places open with one game remaining. Basel defender Michael Lang struck in the 89th minute to earn a win for the Swiss champion.

Still, United leads the standings with 12 points, three clear of both Basel and CSKA Moscow, which earlier won 2-0 at home to last-place Benfica.

In the final round on Dec. 5, Basel plays at last-place Benfica, and United hosts CSKA.

Georgy Shchennikov gave CSKA an early lead, despite an apparent offside. Then an own goal from Jardel ensured that Benfica — which is eliminated — suffered its fifth defeat in five Champions League games.

    ——

    GROUP B

Neymar scored twice and set up another goal as Paris Saint-Germain produced its biggest Champions League win to extend its perfect record in the group stage this season.

PSG leads Group B with 15 points, three more than Bayern Munich, which won 2-1 at Anderlecht. Both PSG and Bayern are guaranteed a spot in the knockout phase and will battle for group supremacy on Dec. 5.

Celtic forward Moussa Dembele surprised the hosts with his first minute goal, but PSG responded with four goals in the first half – two from Neymar, one from Edinson Cavani and the other from Kylian Mbappe.

The one-way traffic continued after the break with Cavani scoring again to take his career total with PSG to 151, while Marco Verratti and Dani Alves also found the net.

    ——

    GROUP C

Following a humbling 3-0 loss in Rome, Willian led Chelsea’s efforts to get its European campaign back on track, scoring a goal in each half and winning a penalty.

Eden Hazard made it 1-0 from the penalty spot in the 21st minute, calmly sending the goalkeeper the wrong way. Home team captain Rashad F. Sadygov had received a straight red card for tugging back Willian just inside the area as the Chelsea forward ran onto Eden Hazard’s pass.

Hazard then fed Willian with a back-heel pass to make it 2-0 in the 37th.

Qarabag, the first club from Azerbaijan to reach the group stage of the Champions League, had no better luck in the second half. Cesc Fabregas scored from the penalty spot in the 73rd minute and Willian added his second goal, a drive from 20 metres, five minutes from time.

Antoine Griezmann found the net with a stunning overhead kick as Atletico Madrid defeated Roma 2-0 to keep alive its hopes of advancing.

Substitute Kevin Gameiro scored the second to seal Atletico’s first Champions League victory this season.

Atletico has six points, two less than Roma, with one match to play.

    ——

    GROUP D

Juventus will have to wait until the final round to try and qualify for the knockout stages. The Italian side remained second in the group but is only a point above Sporting Lisbon, which beat Olympiakos 3-1.

The Italian side — which reached the final in two of the last three seasons — next visits Olympiakos, while Sporting travels to Barcelona.

Barcelona, which rested Lionel Messi until the 56th minute, went closest to breaking the deadlock when Ivan Rakitic hit the post with a free kick.

In Portugal, Bas Dost scored a goal in each half for Sporting Lisbon. Bruno Cesar added the third while Vadis Odjidja scored the consolation goal for Olympiakos.
