Cristiano Ronaldo and breaking records go hand in hand.

Many speculated that when the Portuguese superstar left Real Madrid earlier this summer, his playing days would have peaked, and that the goal-scoring antics that he enjoyed at Madrid wouldn’t be so plentiful anymore.

Indeed, his initial slump did show a sign of worry, and even the most faithful of fans may have thought that perhaps Juventus had erred in making the former Manchester United star their most expensive signing.

Fast-forward to the present day, and CR7 is back on track. In fact, such has been the brilliance of the 33-year-old forward, that he has broken a record that had stood safe for over 60 years.

Cristiano Ronaldo Reveals Why He Left Real Madrid

With his brace against Empoli on Saturday, Ronaldo brought his league tally to 7 goals in 10 games. This is the best start to life that a forward has had at Juventus since John Charles.

What makes this tally even more special is that Ronaldo has managed to better the starts of some of the biggest names to have graced the Old Lady.

    BOOM!

Cristiano Ronaldo now has the best goal-scoring start for Juventus since the great John Charles 60 years ago. 💥 pic.twitter.com/5IWrbpYQT9

    — Cristiano Ronaldo (@TeamCRonaldo) October 30, 2018

Expensive signings like Gonzalo Higuain, Carlos Tevez, and Filippo Inzaghi only managed 6 goals in their first 10 games, while on a more shocking note, the likes of Alessandro Del Piero, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, and David Trezeguet were able to net only 5 at that infantile stage.

While this is a feat that is dwarfed in comparison to some of the Portuguese star’s other records, particularly the kinds he broke with Los Blancos, it is a hopeful start to life nevertheless.

Much has been said about Ronaldo losing his spark. However, such numbers seem to indicate that he is merely adjusting to life at a new club, and that the formidable presence that his inclusion in any match-day squad brings is yet to falter.

Why are 92% of you ignoring the best defender on Dream Team?

The winter-nights are drawing in but the cold weather hasn’t cooled Man City’s title charge.

Pep Guardiola’s men are outscoring all who stand in their way this season but their defence has arguably been just as formidable.

Crucial to remedying what was once City’s achilles heel has been Aymeric Laporte.

Fans and pundits alike have been waxing lyrical at the deadly attacking play produced by Man City.

However have we actually been overlooking the most impressive component of the Premier League champions this season?

Guardiola’s side have conceded just six goals in all competitions and have seemingly rectified what was once labelled as their weak point.

Laporte’s emergence as a star-performer since his January move from Atletico Bilbao has added to the wealth of world-class centre-back options at Guardiola’s disposal.

The Frenchman has become one of City’s most important players.

    Teacher’s pet

    Reuters A*s across the board[/caption]

Guardiola won’t like to admit that he has dressing-room favourites, but he definitely does and Laporte is clearly one of them.

The towering defender has been a mainstay in City’s back-line for much of the campaign, missing just one of their 14 games this season.

John Stones, Nicolas Otamendi and even stalwart club captain Vincent Kompany have been the ones fearing for their starting-berths, while Laporte is effectively a guaranteed starter.

Be it at the heart of the defence or deployed as a makeshift left-back, the 24-year-old has shone whenever he’s been tested.

    A threat in both boxes

AFP or licensors More lethal than Harry Kane[/caption]

Not only have Laporte’s defensive displays been impressive but his towering stature has helped to add an extra dimension to City’s goal-threat from set-pieces.

At 6ft4, the Frenchman is far from your typical Guardiola player, but City are reaping the benefits of having a target-man in the area from corners and wide free-kicks.

Laporte has scored two goals from headers this season and given opposition defenders another thing to worry about when they are given a brief respite from chasing the shadows of David Silva and Sergio Aguero.

    Fixture friendliness

AFP or licensors They’ve already faced their toughest tests[/caption]

As City have already come out of clashes with Arsenal, Liverpool and Spurs unscathed this season, they are a more favourable run of fixtures in the coming weeks.

A string of three home games in-a-row for Guardiola’s men kicks-off with a Carabao Cup clash against Fulham on Thursday, before they face Southampton and Shakhtar Donetsk in front of their own fans.

Laporte will no doubt continue to avert the clutches of his manager’s overzealous rotation policy.

With a price-tag of £4.2m, Laporte is actually one of the best value-for-money defenders in Dream Team.

The Frenchman is currently the highest point-scoring defender in the game with an impressive 81 fantasy football points to his name already.

The Man City ever-present has only been selected by 8.5% of managers despite costing less than Man United’s Chris Smalling (£4.3m) and Harry Maguire (£4.4m). He’s even got more points than the pair combined.

Potential Lineups: Manchester United vs Everton

    REUTERS/Andrew Yates

Everton is the next name on Jose Mourinho’s potential sheet of worry, as the two sides clash at Old Trafford.

Despite showing positive trends in their past Premier League matches, Manchester United are still poised quite worryingly at the 10th spot, with Everton actually reigning a point above them seated in the 8th place.

Let us have a look at how both sides could lineup during the weekend game:

    Manchester United

Mourinho’s injury sheet is populated by Sanchez and Lingard, who are recovering from groin problems, while Rojo and McTominay are ailing from knee woes.

Dalot, Jones, and Fellaini also sit on the uncertainty list, although both Lingard and McTominay could still muster a late appearance.

Against the Toffees, Mourinho simply can’t wait till half-time to go all guns blazing. Romelu Lukaku, in particular, will have to work out his awful showings and worrying goal-drought, and his former club might be as good a chomping place to start as any.

Martial will be hoping to keep up his brilliant form as of recent, and supporters will be hoping the Frenchman’s services aren’t called for after United have gone down.

    Goalkeeper: De Gea
    Defenders: Valencia, Smalling, Lindelof, Shaw
    Midfielders: Matic, Pogba
    Forwards: Rashford, Mata, Martial; Lukaku

    Formation: 4-2-3-1

    Everton

Marco Silva’s side comes to Old Trafford with a woeful past record, although the table-dynamics ought to give them a significant amount of confidence for the game.

For their part, Everton will still have to muse over the possible absence of Baningime, McCarthy, and Jagielka, all of whom are mercifully back in training in one form or the other, so the squad remains relatively fit.

Forward Richarlison has proven to be a decent investment this season, and the Theatre of Dreams may be a worthwhile place for him to swagger ahead with his goal tally, while former Red Devil Michael Keane will also look to impress.

    Goalkeeper: Pickford
    Defenders: Coleman, Keane, Zouma, Digne
    Midfielders: Gomes, Gayle
    Forwards: Walcott, Sigurdsson, Bernard; Richarlison

    Formation: 4-2-3-1

Romelu Lukaku’s poor performances in front of goal have cost Manchester United heavily over the past few weeks. The Belgian International has been struggling to find the goals, scoring a blank in his last 8 appearances.

Recent reports even suggest that manager Jose Mourinho might decide to drop the striker for their upcoming Premier League fixture against Everton this weekend.

Amid such troubling times for the striker, former Manchester United star Dimitar Berbatov has provided a theory as to why Lukaku has failed to score goals for his side this season.

“I know he’s not scored for eight games, but I don’t think the criticism of Lukaku is fair,” said the Bulgarian forward. “As Jose Mourinho said, he’s working very hard for the team, but this might actually be working against the striker.

“He wants to impress so badly that he is doing too much, and not doing the simple things like getting into the box. He is probably over complicating things; you don’t want to see him popping up at left-back as he did on Tuesday.”

Berbatov seems to have stolen words right from every Manchester United fan’s mouth, as a majority of the fanbase agrees with this assessment.

Lukaku is known for his ability to be in the right place at the right time, and he must focus on his positioning and shooting rather than digging deep and providing cover for the defence.

    Dream Team FC
Ranking the Premier League’s non-scoring strike brigade

The role of the humble striker is always evolving.

These days you’ve got false 9s, false 10s, target men, inverted target men, poachers, raumdeuters… well spare you the xG chat.

You’ve also got the non-scoring striker. Due to a variety of reasons, be it tactical or technical, these strikers can’t find the back of the net for love nor money. Actually, they get plenty of money.

The role is becoming something of a fixture in Premier League XIs. So who’s king of the non-scoring strikers?

    The non-scoring GOAT

    9 Kenneth Zohore (Cardiff)

Big Ken scored ten goals in 11 games for Cardiff between 31 January 2017 and 1 April 2017. But since then, and in spite of Cardiff’s promotion to the top flight, the goals have dried up.

The 24-year-old is yet to score in the Premier League, meaning the last time he found the back of the net was 14 April.

He’s not helped by the fact the service he receives at Cardiff makes Tiger Woods teeing off at St Andrews look subtle.

Nothing to see hereGetty Images - Getty

    8 Jurgen Locadia (Brighton)

Brighton splashed out on Locadia in January after watching the Dutchman scored nine goals in 15 Eredivisie games.

He netted on his debut, an FA Cup win against Coventry, and then scored eight minutes into his first taste of Premier League football.

This goalsoring lark is easy. But after 15 games without a goal, Locadia has very much lost his place to the surprisingly prolific Glenn Murray.

    7 Laurent Depoitre

The man with a pop star’s name and a builder’s frame.

Depoitre joins David Nugent in the exclusive ‘one international game, one international goal club’, having scored on his Belgium debut.

But, with no Premier League goal since 9 May, it’s unlikely he’ll be adding to his international résumé soon.

    Swapping shirts earlyReuters

    6 Ashley Barnes

Did you know Ashley Barnes played for Austria Under-20? Of course you did, because someone mentions it every time his name pops up in conversation.

Two goals against Bournemouth in September were a rarity for a man who hasn’t hit double figures in a league season since 2012.

Marko Arnautovic’s place up front for Austria is safe, for now.

    Eat itPA:Empics Sport

    5 Salomon Rondon (Newcastle)

Buying House of Fraser hours after deadline day wasn’t the only bit of trolling Mike Ashley did during the summer transfer market.

He swapped Dwight Gayle, a striker permanently too good for the Championship but not quite good enough for the Premier League, for West Brom’s Rondon.

Rondon hasn’t scored a Premier League goal since April. Top bit of work that, Mike.

At least you get 40% off at House of FraserPA:Press Association

    4 Christian Benteke (Crystal Palace)

Once worth £32.5million, Palace couldn’t pay anyone to take Benteke off their hands in his current form.

The 27-year-old’s goalless streak dates back to 28 April, although you’ve got to go even further, to 30 January, to find his last strike from open play.

Alexa, show me the opposite of prolific.

Probably best to leave it in there, ChristianGetty - Contributor

    3 Dominic Calvert-Lewin (Everton)

Calvert-Lewin is the type of player you assume, having seen him fleetingly on Match of the Day, is prolific.

But what if we told you he scored four goals last season, and has netted just once this campaign?

You’d call us liars. You’d be wrong.

Calvert-Lewin got off the mark against Crystal Palace after writing this. Shows what we know.

    Who can shout the loudest?Reuters

    2 Olivier Giroud

    Making firing blanks sexy.

Giroud’s scuffed his way to a ‘French Emile Heskey’ nickname, such are his perplexing combination of woes in front of goal and effective link-up play.

Nine Premier League games and counting without a goal. At least his beard still looks good.

How big is a piece of string, Olivier?AFP or licensors

    1 Shane Long (Southampton)

Imagine turning up to work for two years, clocking out each day without picking up a pen and not getting sacked for it. You’d be classed a genius.

So it is that Long leads the way when it comes to non-scoring Premier League strikers.

The Irishman scored two Premier League goals last season and hasn’t found the back of the net since April. All whilst cashing cheques. Well played, good sir.

Axel Witsel has emerged from the footballing graveyard to prove his doubters wrong

Be honest, you never really rated him.

Borussia Dortmund fans will tell you that Axel Witsel has been a revelation this season.

The 29-year-old is one cap shy of a century for Belgium, yet he was always one of those players who the majority just never seemed to ‘get.’

SIGN UP – WIN £10k BY PLAYING DREAM TEAM WEEKENDER THIS WEEKEND

Getty - Contributor You all know the name[/caption]

Witsel has never played in the Premier League and his style is not one that attracts fandom online, so he’s still relatively unknown to an English audience.

    It’s our classic naivety, really.

For many, their only exposure to Witsel would have been his international outings for Roberto Martinez’s Belgium – a side for which he is an ever-present.

His tally of 99 appearances for the Red Devils shows just how highly the national team rate him.

Getty - Contributor Not pretty, but effective[/caption]

Dortmund’s scouts recognised what Witsel could offer a top side and he was subsequently snapped up.

Having been stranded in the footballing abyss of the Chinese Super League for the past year, it was a welcome return to European soil for the 29-year-old.

Witsel’s £20million release clause was triggered and he became a focal point of Dortmund’s side in no time.

AFP or licensors Ignore what the guy behind is doing and focus on Witsel[/caption]

Featuring in all seven Bundesliga games for Lucien Favre’s side, as well as their two Champions League encounters, he’s been an ever-present.

The follicly-blessed midfielder has been crucial in Dortmund’s unbeaten start and subsequent rise to 1st in the table.

When asked about Witsel’s impact, Thomas Delaney and Marco Reus both described him as “calm.”

AFP or licensors He’s fully under control here[/caption]

It’s that calming influence that has helped him become Dortmund’s midfield general.

Witsel’s metronome style has given him a pass success ratio of 93% according to WhoScored. The Belgian Sergio Busquets?

Partnered with either Delaney or Mahmoud Dahoud, Witsel keeps things ticking over alongside a more expansive player.

That’s not to say he doesn’t have his moments…

Witsel taking to life in the Bundesliga like a duck to water has been particularly detrimental to German starlet Julian Weigl.

The 23-year-old who also favours a deep-lying midfield role, has been the fall guy of all this.

Those Man City links now seem like a distant memory.

    Frustration

A double pivot that pairs the two of them together is what some Dortmund fans will tell you they want going forward.

That duo have lined up together just once this season – in the 4-3 victory over Augsburg.

    But is it progressive enough?

    Getty - Contributor The future?[/caption]

Witsel’s revival from the footballing graveyard of the Chinese Super League should be applauded.

Just when his career looked destined to be drowned in a pool of riches, he swam against the tide.

There’s still time for others to join him too.

Jose Mourinho puts in bid for Jordan Pickford after seeing his recovery tackle

Jose Mourinho called Marco Silva during the England game to put a bid in for Jordan Pickford as a central defender.

According to unofficial sources the Man United boss wanted Pickford to line up in his back four after seeing his incredible recovery tackle on Paco Alcacer.

Pickford left nearly every England short of breath when he attempted a Cruyff turn in his own area with the score 3-1.

Lee Satchell, United’s unofficial defensive scout, said that he recommended the idea of Pickford replacing Chris Smalling or Phil Jones in United’s back to Mourinho and he loved the idea.

“Jose said he was going to ring Marco Silva right now because that tackle was better than anything he had seen from the players this season,” Satchell said.

“He added, ‘why would I bother playing Smalling, Jones or Eric Bailly, when I could just have Pickford as a one-man wrecking ball at the back?’

Satchell said Jose wasn’t bothered about the dodgy Cruyff turn before as he would drill it into him that all he had to do was tackle anything that breathes and then launch the ball long for Marouane Fellaini to do the rest.

After Alcacer nicked the ball off Pickford he was destined to score only to be tugged back before Pickford slid in to blast the ball away.

Satchell said Jose called it ‘perfect defending’.

  • FIFA 19: 8 players who are much better in FIFA than they are in real life

    Dream Team FC
FIFA 19: 8 players who are much better in FIFA than they are in real life

Sometimes, no matter how hard you try, you’ll never be good enough.

And that’s exactly what happened with these lot when they came to the Premier League.

But despite their real life reputations taking a hit, on FIFA they are very, very capable players.

We go through the footballers who are better in EA Sports football series than are in real life.

Let’s kick off with a FIFA 18 favourite.

    Tiémoué Bakayoko

The French midfielder tanked at Chelsea and is currently on loan in Milan.

Still, in FIFA 18 at least, he was an absolute machine.

With high passing, pace, dribbling and defending scores – he’s exactly the sort of player Chelsea would want in their ranks.

Sadly, his FIFA 19 card was hit pretty hard – seeing the Frenchman drop two points to 80.

    Titus Bramble

He was certainly capable of brilliance, but too often let himself down with poor concentration and a fear of the big stage.

On FIFA, though, Bramble was more than capable. At his peak on the game, he boasted an overall of 75 – with decent pace and heading.

In fairness, when Bramble moved to Wigan he was voted the club’s Player of the Year and Players’ Player of the Year for the 08/09 season.

    Eric Djemba-Djemba

Not a popular signing by Sir Alex Ferguson at Manchester United – and barely managed to keep up with the pace.

On FIFA 13, he reached a career high 72 rating – with his pace and heading ability being the standout attributes.

Sure, he was hardly a superstar – but he was a lot more effective in the game than real life.

    Bebe

Tiago Manuel Dias Correia or Bebe may have starred in the Portuguese second division, but tanked when he arrived at Manchester United.

In FIFA 18, though, he is very good indeed.

With 83 pace, he’s quick enough to get around most defenders.

While, solid shooting, dribbling and passing makes him a threat inside and outside the box.

A bulky frame helps him hold the ball up in the midfield – which often comes in handy.

    Aiden McGeady

    mac

Quick feet but a lack of end product is probably the way to sum up Aiden McGeady.

The Republic of Ireland winger is currently playing for Championship club Preston North End, but punches well above his weight on FIFA.

He peaked on FIFA 12, where he scored a brilliant 84 rating.

Rapid pace and incredible dribbling ability meant McGeady was capable of running around anyone. Shooting at 77 meant he was sound in front of goal, too.

    Albert Luque

    luque

Albert Luque joined Newcastle for £9.5 million  in 2005 but spent most of his time being injured or terrible.

In FIFA, though, he fared a bit better.

A career best score of 77 in FIFA 10 saw him rewarded with decent pace, close control and passing.

    Jean Alain Boumsong

    boum

Jean Alain Boumsong joined the likes of Bramble and Luque in a woefully weak Newcastle side.

Error prone and lacking technical ability, the Frenchman was often left wanting in the Prem.

In FIFA he fared better – with a respectable 79 score for defence.

He hit his peak in FIFA 13, with an overall score of 77.

    Mido

    mido

Mido may have more than 50 caps for Egpyt but failed to light up the Prem when he joined Tottenham.

In FIFA 11, he was far from incredible, but managed a career high of 74.

He was decent in front of goal – especially with his head.
