Liverpool and Spurs land in Champions League ‘Groups of Death’ after tricky draw

Did you know that 40% of Champions League winners have come from Group F since 2003/04?

Or that Group G hasn’t provided a Champions League winner in the last 15 years?

Our thanks to Opta for those pearls of wisdom.

40% – 40% of Champions League winners have come from group F under the current formula, since 2003/04 (6 out of 15). Meanwhile, Group G is the only group not to have produced a single winner in the last 15 seasons. Quirk. #UCLDraw

So to what must be the most tedious event in the whole of football- the 2018/19 Champions League draw.

Legends assemble, balls are awkwardly opened and team delegates try their best to look pleased after drawing a European giant.

Despite finishing as runners-up in last season’s competition Liverpool had to make do with a place in pot 3.

Man City were England’s sole representatives in pot 1 while Spurs and Man United both lay in wait in pot 2.

Smile for the camerasAFP or licensors

Liverpool landed in the obligatory ‘Group of Death’, also known as a selection of hard fixtures, along with PSG, Napoli and Red Star Belgrade.

It was a case of deja vu for City who were drawn with Shakhtar Donetsk again, as well as Lyon and Hoffenheim.

Spurs earned themselves a glamour tie with Barcelona, while PSV and Inter Milan will also provide stiff competition.

United were drawn alongside Juventus, Valencia and Young Boys in Group H, meaning another Old Trafford return for Cristiano Ronaldo.

Time for a little danceNews Group Newspapers Ltd

Narratives galore, a chance to see Lionel Messi in London and Jose Mourinho losing his head after being hammered by Young Boys.

Ahh, we’ve missed the Champions League.

Maybe next year UEFA can have a little think about livening up the draw though? Introducing rollerblades and fiery balls would be a start…

    Champions League draw in full:

Group A- Atletico Madrid, Borussia Dortmund, Monaco, Club Brugge

Group B- Barcelona, Spurs, PSV, Inter Milan

Group C- PSG, Napoli, Liverpool, Red Star Belgrade

Group D- Lokomotiv Moscow, Porto, Schalke, Galatasaray

Group E- Bayern Munich, Benfica, Ajax, AEK

Group F- Man City, Shakhtar Donetsk, Lyon and Hoffenheim

Group G- Real Madrid, Roma, CSKA Moscow, Viktoria Plzen

Group H- Juventus, Man United, Valencia, Young Boys

  • FIFA 19: 7 of the best new secret features in Career mode

    Dream Team FC
FIFA 19: 7 of the best new secret features in Career mode

The Champions League coming to FIFA 19 is one of the biggest developments Career mode has ever had.

For years EA has been peddling the league’s ‘budget’ version, the Champions Cup.

While some are worried the mode won’t see much love this year, the addition of the Champions League will still change FIFA 19 Career mode in a number of ways.

Not all the details about Career mode in FIFA 19 have been released yet

    Ultimate difficulty has been added

The hardest AI difficulty you can play against in Ultimate team has been brought across to Career mode.

This means those of you looking for a step up from the legendary difficulty will get a chance to show off your skills and get some real practice in.

New training modes will give you the practice you need to excel in Career mode

    Authentic and exciting

In an interview with USGamer, FIFA 19 creative director Matthew Prior spoke about Career mode and how changes would be seen by players.

“There’s a big update in the sense that the Champions League is included” Prior said. “This time, Career mode is the most authentic it has ever been.” Prior also hinted there would be a whole user interface overhaul to reflect the new league – not to mention some key cinematic additions that help add more realism.

UEFA Champions League draw cinematic scenes are going to be a real treat

Prior also revealed there would definitely be a Champions League and Europa Leauge draw cinematic.

Players will be able to see this whole sequence play out finding out which teams are in which groups.

    Cut-scenes are being spiced up

    Pre-game cutscenes

Along with the draw cinematics, you will also get to see the players getting off the bus at the beginning of a game along with mid-game cut scenes of players warming up and taking selfies with the crowd. Player signing scenes have also had a re-vamp.

New training zone will give you the chance to play with the all-new active-touch system

    Training players up

One of the most exciting features likely to have a huge effect on how you play is the ability to train a player’s strength and sprint speed.

Training them up will no doubt put your team leagues ahead of opponents.

FIFA 19 Standard and Champions Editions are available to pre-order from GAME and Amazon

    Managers and handling the press

You’ll now be able to customise your managers and have them host press conferences.

YouTuber Futmentor drafted up some images on how the fully customisable manager’s locker may look.

FIFA 18 had limited faces and styles when it came to picking your managers.

Concept of what the manager’s locker could look like from Futmentor

With the manager’s press conferences being confirmed by EA’s sports developer, Futmentor also created an image of how this may look.

Multiple dialogue options will allow players to react to games the way they want to, but be warned – your choices may dramatically affect your career.

Concept of multiple dialogue options when hosting a press conference after a game

    Releaseeee meeee

When searching for new players to sign you can now tick a box to only see players with a release clause in their contract.

This will ultimately save you a lot of time and money.

In FIFA 18 it was undisclosed whether or not players had a release clause when signing them

    Revamped reward system

Ever felt like you weren’t rewarded for how well you did each season?

Well, you can now get a budget increase and a boat-load more cash depending on how well you did in the previous season.

The board will give you more funds for a good or above-average season.

The FIFA 19 demo will be out in early September – although it won’t include a Career mode section

What’s your favourite change coming to FIFA 19’s career mode?

Sociedad squanders lead, misses chance for another away win

MADRID — Real Sociedad couldn’t hold on to a two-goal lead at Leganes on Friday, conceding late in a 2-2 draw and missing a chance to keep its perfect away start in the Spanish league.

Sociedad, which won 2-1 at Villarreal in the first round, took a 2-0 lead by the 17th minute at Butarque Stadium.

Midfielder David Zurutuza opened for the visitors in the 11th and Asier Illarramendi added to the lead six minutes later. But Moroccan midfielder Nabil El Zhar scored twice after halftime to give the hosts the draw.

"We gave away two goals early," said El Zhar, who has already matched his goal total from last season, adding that his team had to be "focused from the first minute."

Sociedad had a great chance for a 3-1 lead in a 4-on-1 breakaway, but striker Willian Jose had his shot saved by Leganes goalkeeper Ivan Cuellar.

Sociedad will play at Eibar in the next round in its third straight away game because its Anoeta Stadium is being renovated.

Also Friday, Getafe beat Eibar 2-0 at home with goals from Angel Rodriguez and Jorge Molina.

Defending champion Barcelona plays at promoted Valladolid on Saturday, while Real Madrid is at Girona on Sunday.

AUSTIN, Texas — Austin doesn’t have a Major League Soccer team just yet, but the club-to-come-later already has a name, a logo and team colours.

Anthony Precourt, who owns the Columbus Crew and wants to move his team to Austin by next season, and his Precourt Sports Ventures ownership group unveiled the Austin FC name and its green, black and white logo Wednesday night in Austin. The team name had already been registered by MLS in 2017.

The city council voted last week to move ahead with a stadium plan for a $200 million, 20,000-seat facility that will be privately financed and built on city land.

Precourt still faces a lawsuit in Ohio that seeks to keep the team in Columbus. The Crew is one of MLS’s founding franchises.

  • What N’Golo Kante Said To An Arsenal Fan After Chelsea’s London Derby Win

    BlameFootball
What N’Golo Kante Said To An Arsenal Fan After Chelsea’s London Derby Win

    Reuters/John Sibley

Arsenal weren’t able to get the momentum they wanted during the London Derby earlier this week, as Chelsea edged past them to win 3-2 at Stamford Bridge.

Goals from Pedro and Morata looked to set the Blues to a trademark Sarri victory before Arsenal brought the game back with crucial goals from Mkhitaryan and Iwobi. However, an 81st-minute winner from Alonso set the stage for Chelsea’s first home win.

The game was a simple showcase of how life under Maurizio Sarri would be, with Chelsea’s defensive chinks being openly taken advantage of by the Gunners, and several players having to play in a different role than they are used to.

One such talent was N’Golo Kante, who has been assigned a more advanced role, and is learning to settle well within a system that focuses on putting the pressure on the front foot and getting goals. However, when the Frenchman ran into an Arsenal fan, he was far from offensive.

Twitter user @afcSharky ran into the 27-year-old in a Westfield shopping center and tweeted the following about the encounter: “Just met this man. Told him I was an arsenal fan and I was upset about the game this weekend but he smiled at me and said “sorry”. What a guy 😭”.

A nice gesture of class from Kante, and one that is in line with what has made him a fan-favorite from Leicester to London.

Such a move is particularly nice considering how not all fans nor players are chirpy towards members of their rival clubs, and this meeting is best described as civil in comparison.

With the season still young, Sarri and company will certainly be fancying their chances at the title, and how the likes of Kante gel into the new set-up will be crucial to their hopes for silverware.

    REUTERS/David Klein

It took just two games for Manchester United to frustrate their fans, as they were handed a 3-2 defeat by Brighton in their first away game of this season.

A dismal side faced off against an attractive and passionate Brighton team, and although Romelu Lukaku’s header and Paul Pogba’s late penalty saved them some face, the Red Devils still lost out on three points way too early in the campaign.

In fact, the early defeat, while not earth-shattering with regard to their consequences, already has some supporters questioning United’s hopes for the Premier League title this season. And this opinion may be shared by their gaffer too.

When quizzed on United’s title chances after the match, MEN reports Jose Mourinho to have given this cryptic answer: “I told in some press conference in end of November, December you will have an idea if we can compete.”

    RELATED:

REVEALED: The Manager Who Is Favorite To Replace Jose Mourinho

Is this a sense of cynicism from the famously sarcastic Portuguese manager, or has he truly given up hope on the club? He did go on to critically analyse his side’s poor display, by stating: “We made mistakes and were punished by our mistakes.

“Sometimes you make mistakes and are punished sometimes the opponent doesn’t take advantage of the gifts, and sometimes they do and this time was almost three on three so they were critical in the gifts that we gave them and because of that I think they deserve.”

    RELATED:

Reason Why Woodward Visited Man Utd’s Dressing Room After Brighton Loss

United’s defense was in shambles for much of the game, as mistakes from Eric Bailly and Victor Lindelof practically gifted Brighton their goals.

Their forward line, apart from an early run from Martial and occasional moments of inspiration from subs Rashford and Lingard, performed quite badly too.

In fact, Albion looked nothing like a team slated for the second season woe of newly promoted sides.

Are United in big trouble already, or is if far too soon to shrug the Mancunians aside?

Real Madrid wins Spanish league opener without Ronaldo

MADRID — Gareth Bale is doing his part to help Real Madrid get over Cristiano Ronaldo’s departure.

Bale scored in Madrid’s Spanish league opener and set up the other goal in a 2-0 win over Getafe in Sunday’s Madrid derby.

Dani Carvajal also scored for Madrid, which for the first time in nearly a decade started its league campaign without Ronaldo, the club’s greatest goal-scorer.

Bale, who hadn’t played much while Ronaldo was still on the team before he moved to Juventus in the off-season, scored in the 51st minute with a shot from inside the area after a well-placed cross by Marco Asensio.

"I feel good," said Bale, who has scored in Madrid’s league opener in three straight years. "We are very upbeat with our chances this season."

Bale had already struck the crossbar with a 16th-minute header, and a few minutes later he provided the cross that led to Carvajal’s goal after Getafe goalkeeper David Soria failed to fully clear the ball.

Bale didn’t have many chances as a starter under coach Zinedine Zidane, but is likely to gain a bigger role as new manager Julen Lopetegui deals with Ronaldo’s absence and the lack of major signings by the club.

Bale received a loud ovation by the crowd at the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium when he was substituted by Lucas Vazquez in the 77th minute.

Fewer than 50,000 fans made it to the Bernabeu for the 10:15 p.m. start (local time), the team’s worst attendance since before Ronaldo arrived in 2009, according to Spanish media.

Madrid started its season with a loss to city rival Atletico Madrid in the UEFA Super Cup final. It was only third in the league last season, behind Atletico and champion Barcelona.

Barcelona opened with a 3-0 win over Alaves at Camp Nou Stadium on Saturday, with a pair of goals by Lionel Messi.

Atletico Madrid visits Valencia on Monday.

    VAR DEBUTS

Sevilla and Rayo Vallecano saw calls go both ways in the video assistant referee (VAR) debut in the Spanish league.

Spain was late to adopt the new technology, but it was used twice in Sevilla’s 4-1 win at Rayo. It awarded Sevilla a 79th-minute goal by Andre Silva that had been initially disallowed because of offside, and about five minutes later it gave Rayo a penalty kick after a foul had been originally called outside the area.

The newly signed Silva ended with a hat trick on his league debut.

Adrian Embarba converted the penalty for the hosts, which hadn’t played in the top flight since the 2015-2016 season.

    HUESCA STARTS IN STYLE

Huesca made its Spanish league debut in style, winning 2-1 at Eibar.

The small club from northeastern Spain needed only five minutes to score its first-ever goal in the top flight, coming from Alex Gallar after a neat run through the Eibar defence.

The midfielder also netted the second, a free-kick cross that missed everyone inside the area and went directly into the goal.

Gonzalo Escalante pulled the hosts closer in the 69th.

Huesca had played a total of only eight seasons in the second division before earning its promotion with a second-place finish last season.

The other promoted club this season was Valladolid, which opened with a 0-0 draw at Girona on Friday.

Fantasy football: Hardly anyone has picked this potential must-have bargain

Nothing makes a fantasy football manager smile like a good bargain.

A player who mixes it with the top point-scorers who is valued at half the price is a must-have for Dream Team 2018/19.

After all the pre-season uncertainty, Premier League managers finally showed their cards at the weekend and with three transfers to use before the start of September, now is the time to react.

    Mate, surely patches?PA:Press Association

Maurizio Sarri kick-started his Premier League career with a 3-0 win away to Huddersfield.

Jorginho and N’Golo Kante helped themselves to rare appearances on the scoresheet before Pedro completed the rout with ten minutes remaining.

The former Barcelona winger also claimed 5 Star Man points, taking his tally after Game Week 1 to 13.

Just 1.7% of Dream Team managers took a punt on Pedro at £2.5m.

Perhaps it’s time more took the risk?

    Mini-league influencer incomingReuters

Sarri will be hoping to replicate the productive frontline he constructed at Napoli.

Jose Callejon, Lorenzo Insigne and Dries Mertens made life hell for Serie A defenders last season under the Italian gaffer’s guidance.

Pedro fits the profile needed for Sarri’s preferred front three — diminutive, quick, comfortable in possession.

Anyone else feeling nostalgic for last season’s Napoli side already?Getty Images - Getty

With Alvaro Morata desperately struggling for form and Olivier Giroud a tad immobile for Sarri’s liking, there’s every chance we could see Pedro keep his place in the starting line-up when Eden Hazard regains match fitness.

Willian, Hazard, Pedro screams fluidity and would be capable of the rapid counterattacks Napoli used so effectively last season.

It may even be the case that Pedro finds himself ahead of Willian in the pecking order, such was his form in pre-season.

    The Blues (yellows)Getty - Contributor

This option comes with risk — it’s not inconceivable that Pedro will take up a benchwarmer role in due course.

But given that we have him categorised as a midfielder, it’s certainly an option worth considering.

He is a three-time Champions League winner after all…

Fantasy football tips: Kevin De Bruyne has picked up a ‘serious injury’ in training and put managers on alert

We only got to see a brief glimpse of him at the weekend.

Kevin de Bruyne was one of the must have picks in fantasy football at the start of the season.

The Belgian wizard was the third highest scorer on Dream Team last season, racking up a hefty 284 points, a tally bettered only by Harry Kane (376) and Mo Salah (412).

The Belgian was a points-machine in last season’s fantasy football game

De Bruyne’s popularity is highlighted by the fact that he is the third most selected player on Dream Team, with a mammoth 46% of managers snapping him up.

The 27-year-old is currently the highest selected midfielder by a considerable amount, with his Man City teammate Leroy Sane (28%), someway behind him in second place.

All of these stats make the news that De Bruyne has picked up a ‘serious injury’ in training, even more worrying for fantasy football managers.

PA:Press Association The Belgian is no stranger to lengthy spells on the touchline[/caption]

Pep Guardiola’s talisman is said to have suffered knee ligament damage during a training session with his side on Wednesday.

The exact extent of the injury is still unknown, however, it is rumoured to be a similar problem to the one that ruled him out for two months in 2016.

If the initial reports are correct, De Bruyne could be out of action for City’s next eight games, beginning with the favourable fixture of Huddersfield at home on Sunday.

The Belgian would also miss a potentially crucial trip away to Anfield to face Liverpool.

The news is a big blow for Guardiola, who was doing his best to ease the playmaker back into things, following his player’s heavy involvement at the World Cup.

Reuters The City man was a late replacement for Riyad Mahrez against Arsenal[/caption]

De Bruyne’s injury has sent the world of fantasy football into meltdown, with managers rushing frantically to get the injured £6.5m star out of their teams.

Ahead of City’s next game, managers will be drawing up a list of potential replacements for the Belgian.

One potential option that Dream Team managers might look to could be De Bruyne’s City teammate Bernardo Silva.

Getty - Contributor Could Silva be the man to replacement De Bruyne?[/caption]

The Portuguese playmaker was a standout performer in City’s Community Shield victory over Chelsea, as well as a scorer in the victory over Arsenal.

Silva is a more cost-effective option than his teammate, and is priced up at just £3.5m in Dream Team.

Another potential replacement for the stricken star could be Chelsea’s Eden Hazard.

The Belgian picked up just three fewer points than his countryman in last year’s game (281) and has been a consistent performer in fantasy football for years.

Getty Images - Getty The diminutive No10 picked up an assist in Chelsea’s opening day victory over Huddersfield[/caption]

Hazard is priced up at £6m on Dream Team, leaving you with an additional £.5m to invest elsewhere in your team after you remove De Bruyne.

With £6.5m extra now to play with, the player who you pick to replace De Bruyne could be the biggest decision you make all season.

    No pressure…

Luke Shaw Reveals What Leicester City Keeper Said To Him Post United Win

    Reuters/Andrew Boyers

Luke Shaw had one of his best games in memories of him in a Manchester United shirt. The left-back put in a commanding display in his side’s 2-1 win against Leicester City in their opening game of the 2018-19 Premier League season.

The youngster scored his first ever goal for the club with a brilliant left-footed shot that went past Leicester keeper Kasper Schmeichel.

It helped United go 2-0 up with six minutes left for regulation time. Jamie Vardy got a goal back in injury time for the Foxes, but it was for naught, as Paul Pogba had earlier opened the scoring inside two minutes.

If Shaw was brilliant on the night, so was Kasper Schmeichel. The Denmark international made a brilliant save to deny Romelu Lukaku, who sprawled an open chance after being fed by Alexis Sanchez.

Speaking to Sky Sports, the former Southampton man said that the shot-stopper believed that his first touch was down to luck. Shaw then replied cheekily in a light-hearted manner.
