Belgium played a superb all-round game to perhaps get their biggest win in history when they overcame Brazil in the quarter-finals at the ongoing FIFA World Cup 2018.
An own goal by Fernandinho and a brilliant Kevin de Bruyne strike saw Brazil go down 2-0. They fought back wit Roberto Augusto pulling a goal back, but in the end that wasn’t enough. Belgium’s front three played superbly and the team was helped massively by Thiabut Cortouis as well.
Belgium were magnificent in their approach and credit must be given to Roberto Martinez for getting his team spot on. The inclusion of Marouane Fellaini in the starting XI was a tactical masterclass.
The Manchester United midfielder had a terrific game and was instrumental in the first half. He had a hand in his side’s first goal as well, besides holding the ball well and also defending to his strengths throughout.
That caught the eye of former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand. The England player was particularly impressed by Fellaini’s contribution from midfield in the opening 45 minutes. He then went on to claim that the former Everton player was a monster defensively.
“Fellaini has been monster defensively,” Ferdinand said on BBC Sport. He also went on to add that the ball was held up well and the front three reacted to the situation perfectly. “When the ball goes forward, the platform is there for holding the ball up to let team-mates join and all front three have reacted perfectly.”
Even former German international Jurgen Klinsmann singled out the midfielder. “Fellaini’s having a major game, he’s had an outstanding first-half. The space for Neymar has not been there. It’s an outstanding performance by Belgium in the first-half.”
The European giants also stood to their task in the second half and defended valiantly with Fellaini too making important blocks and interceptions.
