United have upped the ante in their pursuit of Celtic full-back Kieran Tierney, as Jose Mourinho attempts to solve the club’s defensive crisis once and for all, reports the Daily Record.
Mourinho is satisfied by the wide range of options and quality he now has in his attacking positions, but has been underwhelmed by the midfield and defense.
As a result, he is looking to splash big in the summer for the third season running to strengthen the weaker areas of his squad, as he attempts to put up a stronger challenge for the title next season.
Tierney is only 20 years old, but is already well known amongst Europe’s elite clubs. Having made his breakthrough into the Celtic first team as a teenager, the defender’s reputation continues to grow every year.

Mourinho is eager to get rid of the deadwood and make wholesome changes at the back, and it is likely that Matteo Darmian, Daley Blind, and even Luke Shaw will leave the club in the summer, to allow Tierney to come in.
Despite his young age, Tierney has already captained both Celtic and Scotland, displaying leadership qualities that are sorely lacking at United at the moment, and will be required even more so now that Michael Carrick is set to retire at the end of the season.

The defender is also capable of playing anywhere along the back-line, having operated on either flank and also on the left of a back three for his country.
Mourinho values versatility, considering the number of times he has been forced to tinker with formations, and that will work in the Scotsman’s favour.
United have also been linked with a move for Alex Sandro, but Tierney would be a far younger and cheaper option at just upwards of £20 million compared to the €70 million Juventus are asking for their Brazilian full-back.
