It took just two games for Manchester United to frustrate their fans, as they were handed a 3-2 defeat by Brighton in their first away game of this season.

A dismal side faced off against an attractive and passionate Brighton team, and although Romelu Lukaku’s header and Paul Pogba’s late penalty saved them some face, the Red Devils still lost out on three points way too early in the campaign.

In fact, the early defeat, while not earth-shattering with regard to their consequences, already has some supporters questioning United’s hopes for the Premier League title this season. And this opinion may be shared by their gaffer too.

When quizzed on United’s title chances after the match, MEN reports Jose Mourinho to have given this cryptic answer: “I told in some press conference in end of November, December you will have an idea if we can compete.”

Is this a sense of cynicism from the famously sarcastic Portuguese manager, or has he truly given up hope on the club? He did go on to critically analyse his side’s poor display, by stating: “We made mistakes and were punished by our mistakes.

“Sometimes you make mistakes and are punished sometimes the opponent doesn’t take advantage of the gifts, and sometimes they do and this time was almost three on three so they were critical in the gifts that we gave them and because of that I think they deserve.”

United’s defense was in shambles for much of the game, as mistakes from Eric Bailly and Victor Lindelof practically gifted Brighton their goals.

Their forward line, apart from an early run from Martial and occasional moments of inspiration from subs Rashford and Lingard, performed quite badly too.

In fact, Albion looked nothing like a team slated for the second season woe of newly promoted sides.

Are United in big trouble already, or is if far too soon to shrug the Mancunians aside?
