VAR makes a right mess of Spurs’ FA Cup replay with Rochdale and everyone is rather annoyed

Dream Team FC
VAR makes a right mess of Spurs’ FA Cup replay with Rochdale and everyone is rather annoyed

Oh, here we go.

Everyone’s new favourite system of taking the fun out of football has struck yet again.

This time, it’s Spurs who are on the receiving end in their FA Cup replay clash against Rochdale this evening.

In the opening few minutes of the match, the Premier League side looked lively going forward against their League One opponents and duly scored through Erik Lamela. Well, so we all thought, anyway.

Striding down the right wing, Son Heung-min crosses into the box, allowing handsome Fernando Llorente and Rochdale defender James McNulty to challenge for the ball.

The loose ball then falls kindly to Lamela, who simply taps home.

Never a good sign when the big man points to the sky He’s got his finger in his ear now – this isn’t a good sign

But hold on.

With everyone in the stadium settling back down, the referee decides to make an ass of himself by deciding to check in on VAR. And of course, the experts with the technology decide the goal should be overturned.

We’re all pretty perplexed of course, including BT Sport commentator Robbie Savage. “That is an incredible decision,” he says. You’re not wrong, Robbie.

VAR strikes again 👀

Spurs thought they had the lead, but Fernando Llorente was judged to have committed a foul.

Robbie Savage was less than impressed 🤔 pic.twitter.com/IePFp0rjWk

— Football on BT Sport (@btsportfootball) February 28, 2018

So, what on earth happened there, then? Well, it seems Llorente fouled McNulty in the build-up. But at this point, who the hell knows?

VAR rules out Lamela's goal (Llorente grappling with McGahey but "clear and obvious" error? Seemed both grappling). No communication to fans inside ground during considerable delay, something FA/IFAB have to address.

— Henry Winter (@henrywinter) February 28, 2018

Anybody in the stadium (or outside for that matter) know why that was ruled out? Of course not because the VAR treats fans like idiots. Football is so scared of communication. #TOTROC

— Mark Chapman (@markchapman) February 28, 2018

#thfc This game has been absolutely destroyed by the VAR. There's no transparency and confusion reigns inside Wembley.

— Dan Kilpatrick (@Dan_KP) February 28, 2018

Have I missed something clear and obvious? 😡🤣 #VAR @EmiratesFACup #TOTROC

— Alan Shearer (@alanshearer) February 28, 2018

That was pretty bad, right? But wait, it gets worse!

As the game goes on, Son duly puts Spurs ahead and there’s no arguments with that one, thankfully.

But moments later, there’s more controversy as Spurs are on the attack again, this time with Kieran Trippier charging after a long ball. Rochdale’s Matt Done then seems to clip the full-back and he goes down inside the box.

Go on, my Son Nope, more dramatics!

You know what’s coming.

There’s another lengthy period of VAR head-scratching, before the penalty is eventually awarded and Son steps up to take it. He slots home and we all think it’s 2-0.

But, nope, yet again the referee stops play, books Son and disallows the goal. What is going on?

It seems that the South Korean’s stop/start method of taking the penalty is what irked the ref.

This is absolutely bonkers, well worth a watch.

PSG denies reports Neymar will undergo surgery

Paris Saint-Germain coach Unai Emery has denied reports Neymar will undergo surgery after breaking his right foot and spraining the ankle.

Speaking at a news conference on Tuesday, Emery says Neymar needs rest and there is a chance he will recover in time to play against Real Madrid in the Champions League next week.

Neymar, a world record signing from Barcelona for 222 million euros ($260 million) last summer, was injured on Sunday as the French league leader beat Marseille 3-0. Tests showed he has a cracked fifth metatarsal in his right foot along with an ankle injury.

Emery did not say how long Neymar will be sidelined but insisted "there is a small option he can be ready for the match" against Madrid.

PSG faces Real Madrid on March 6, trailing 3-1 from the first leg in the last 16.

No matter where you are in the world you’re never far from Arsenal banter.

The gold medal was taken home by South Korean Lee Seung-Hoon, with Bart Swings picking up a silver medal and Koen Verweij finishing in the bronze medal position.

Then came the nod to Arsenal.

In fourth place was Wenger.

May the fourth be with you

Now unfortunately Arsene Wenger hadn’t almost made the podium in South Korea at the age of 68.

It was actually Swiss speed skater Livio Wenger finishing in fourth.

But when Wenger and fourth are in the same sentence there’s always going to be a mention of Arsenal.

Some things never change

Arsenal finished fourth in the Premier League six times in eight years between 2006 and 2014.

However that must seem like a distant memory for this current Arsenal side who are as close to Burnley in seventh as they are to Chelsea in fourth.

Still, that shouldn’t get in the way of a chance to poke fun at Arsenal.

May the fourth be with you.

FIFA lifts ban on 2026 World Cup voters publicly backing bid

LONDON — FIFA has lifted a ban on voters publicly endorsing a 2026 World Cup bid.

Soccer’s governing body last month ordered officials not to openly discuss the merits of either the joint Northern American bid, featuring the United States, Canada and Mexico, or the rival Morocco contender.

It led to Confederation of African Football President Ahmad, who goes by just one name, expressing frustration at being restricted from backing his continent’s bid.

But FIFA Secretary General Fatma Samoura informed members this week of an about-turn in a letter to member associations offering new guidance on the bid rules of conduct.

In the letter seen by The Associated Press, Samoura now writes that "all public statements by football officials in support of one bidder are admissible provided that they meet the underlying principles of ethical behaviour."

The entire FIFA Congress, which features 211 soccer nations, is due to vote in June on the 2026 host.

Danny Rose shows a touch of class with his Ryan Mason tribute

Danny Rose got plenty of stick from Spurs fans for a perceived attempt to engineer a move away from the club in the summer.

But he showed a genuine touch of class when Harry Kane scored what looked like being the winner in a pulsating FA Cup tie against Rochdale.

While most of Spurs’ players ran off to celebrate with Kane, Rose peeled off and shouted Ryan Mason’s name down the camera.

He gave the lens a kiss before going over the celebrate with his team-mates.

Mason was forced to retire after struggling to make a full recovery from a shocking head injury suffered against Chelsea in January 2017.

A brilliant show of support from Rose towards his former team-mate.

Rose and Mason were team-mates at SpursReuters

Mason was clearly watching on as he tweeted following the celebrations.

At the time it looked like Kane’s penalty, on the ground he made his Football League debut, would be enough to take Spurs through to the next round.

Ian Henderson put Rochdale ahead at half-time before goals from the impressive Lucas Moura and Kane turned the game around.

But there was still time for the magic of the FA Cup to take hold.

Substitute Steve Davies popped up in the 93rd minute to equalise and earn Rochdale a replay.

League One’s bottom side will head to Wembley, but first there’s a trip to Milton Keynes to take care of.

I love this game.

Canadian Sinclair leads NWSL allocated players for this season

TORONTO — Portland Thorns star forward Christine Sinclair leads the list of 11 Canadian internationals designed as allocated players in the National Women’s Soccer League for the upcoming season.

Some 23 Americans were also allocated to clubs.

The salaries of allocated players are paid by the U.S. and Canadian soccer federations. The league’s nine teams all have at least one allocated American player. Seven teams have an allocated Canadian player.

Washington Spirit rookie midfielder Rebecca Quinn and Sky Blue FC forward Adriana Leon join the ranks of Canadian allocated players this season.

Goalkeeper Stephanie Labbe is off the list, having parted ways with Washington and going through the league’s so-called distribution process without being taken by another club.

The other allocated Canadians are goalkeepers Sabrina D’Angelo (North Carolina Courage) and Kailen Sheridan (Sky Blue FC), defenders Allysha Chapman (North Carolina Courage), Shelina Zadorsky (Orlando Pride), midfielders Desiree Scott (Utah Royals FC), Diana Matheson (Utah Royals FC) and forwards Janine Beckie (Sky Blue FC) and Nichelle Prince (Houston Dash).

Among the newcomers on the U.S. allocated list are Jane Campbell (Houston Dash), Abby Dahlkemper (North Carolina Courage), Crystal Dunn (North Carolina Courage) and Taylor Smith (Washington Spirit).

Those who are no longer allocated included Sydney Leroux (Orlando Pride), Ali Krieger (Orlando Pride) and Meghan Klingenberg (Portland Thorns FC). Morgan Brian, who is playing in France with Lyon, also wasn’t allocated.

Toronto FC signs veteran goalkeeper Caleb Patterson-Sewell to deal

Toronto FC signs veteran goalkeeper Caleb Patterson-Sewell to deal
Toronto FC signs veteran goalkeeper Caleb Patterson-Sewell to deal

Toronto FC’s off-season tweaking continued on Wednesday with the signing of goalkeeper Caleb Patterson-Sewell.

TFC acquired the rights to Patterson-Sewell from the New York Red Bulls in exchange for a fourth-round pick in the 2019 MLS SuperDraft. The move comes after the goalkeeper spent part of the Reds’ pre-season training camp in Los Angeles in January. He also travelled with the team to Mexico where it held the second portion of its camp this month.

Patterson-Sewell, a 30-year-old native of Tennessee, signed with the Red Bulls in 2008, but he never played with the club, which still retained his MLS rights up until now. The American goalkeeper went on a whirlwind tour after leaving New York, playing for clubs in Portugal, and a number of teams in North America’s lower leagues, including Miami FC and the Carolina RailHawks.

He spent the 2017 season with the Jacksonville Armada in the second-tier North American Soccer League where he tallied a club record 10 clean sheets, and posted a record of 10-8-13.

TFC now has three goalkeepers on its main roster, Patterson-Sewell joining Alex Bono and Clint Irwin. The club also picked Drew Shepherd at last month’s MLS SuperDraft, but he hasn’t been signed yet.

How does Patterson-Sewell fit in at TFC?

Bono is expected to remain the Reds’ starter this season, after playing a major role in the team’s run to the 2018 MLS Cup final. Irwin would be a starter at most other clubs in MLS, and if he’s tired of serving as backup to Bono, he could request a trade. If that’s the case, Patterson-Sewell would be the new No. 2 goalkeeper.

But it’s more likely that Patterson-Sewell will be the club’s third-string goalkeeper, a spot Toronto had to fill after cutting ties with Mark Pais in the off-season. If that’s the case, expect him to also turn out for the TFC II farm club where he’ll likely get regular playing time in the second-tier United Soccer League.

The announcement of the trade for Patterson-Sewell comes one day after TFC officially announced the signing of Brazilian defender Auro on a loan deal from Sao Paulo, one of the top clubs in Brazil.

Manchester United suffered a humiliating 1-0 defeat at the hands of Rafael Benitez’s Newcastle at St. James’ Park last Sunday, which has caused Jose Mourinho to seriously consider his defensive options ahead of the upcoming summer transfer window.

The humbling loss has left the Red Devils just two points clear of third-placed Liverpool, as they now engage in a downside battle to cement their spot in the top four this campaign.

As a result, the ‘frustrated’ Portuguese tactician is now set to drop the hammer on Chris Smalling and Phil Jones in order to make way for a new centre-back.

According to the report by Mirror, the Special One is ‘planning a serious shake-up of United’s defence this summer — with Chris Smalling and Phil Jones both set to be offloaded’.

WATCH: Where To Play Paul Pogba?

Smalling’s second-half dive resulted in a free-kick which was eventually put in the back of the net by Matt Ritchie and paved the way for Red Devils’ second defeat in three games.

Meanwhile, Jones scored an own goal in the club’s 2-0 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur at Wembley at the start of this month.

Huge Problem For Manchester United Ahead Of Champions League Fixture

It was claimed that Mourinho has told the officials at Old Trafford that ‘they must start spending big on defenders too,’ after United’s rivals, Liverpool and City, forked out £75m and £57m respectively to land Virgil van Dijk and Aymeric Laporte last month.

United have been linked with a massive £50m summer transfer for Leicester City defender Harry Maguire. They are also mooted to make a move for Real Madrid centre-back Raphael Varane in order to find a top quality defensive partner for their most accomplished defender, who is currently sidelined due to an ankle injury, Eric Bailly.

Sky Sports pundit and former United legend, Phil Neville, labelled the duo a “disaster” at the weekend.

Neville said: “They’ve got the best defensive record because they have the best goalkeeper in the world in David De Gea, and Nemanja Matic out in front who protects them really well. But the last two away games, Smalling and Jones have been a disaster.”

Chelsea will be up against familiar opponents Barcelona in the knockout stages of the Champions League, and it has got one Blues’ player very excited, especially with the prospect of facing the legendary Lionel Messi.

Former Leicester City midfielder Danny Drinkwater cannot wait to play against the European and Spanish heavyweights and especially Messi in the historic Nou Camp.

The English international joined Chelsea from the Foxes on the summer transfer deadline day in 2017.

Although he has played against Messi & Co. in a pre-season friendly, the prospect of playing a Champions League tie is a dream affair.

Speaking in an interview with The Mirror at the adidas Cold Blooded boot pack event, Drinkwater revealed what he will say to the evergreen Messi after the match. “I was buzzing the first time I played him so I don’t know what I’ll be like the second time. I’ll have to get his shirt.”

England's Danny Drinkwater during training.

He was quick to point out the astounding qualities of the Argentine, and that he is on a different level.

“You can’t read what he’s doing. He’s rapid with the ball, and his change in directions are almost non-existent. I’ve never played against someone like…I’ve played against people who can change direction quick but he’s just on another level,” said the midfielder.

Messi has been in top form this term for Barcelona, as they maintain their unbeaten record in La Liga and are on the verge of sealing the honour.

Chelsea, meanwhile, are fourth in the Premier League, and have the chance to go a position above when they take on Watford on Monday late night football.
